Framing Family and Fields— A life Behind the Lens and the Land

Eduardo Masferré's journey as a family man is a tale that weaves love, art, and dedication into the rich fabric of his life. After World War II, he established a studio in the picturesque town of Bontoc, serving as his livelihood, where he took portraits and IDs. His baby sister, Eulalia, played a crucial role in helping him establish the Bontoc Studio which was later renamed as The Masferré Studio.

During this time, he often visited his beloved hometown of Sagada, forging a deep friendship with Theofilo Killip, who worked at St. Theodore's Hospital. At 42, Eduardo, a bachelor, focused on photography and his connection with the Cordillera region.

However, a significant turning point occurred during a visit to Sagada when Theofilo Killip introduced Eduardo to Nena Bansiong Ogues, a nurse at the hospital. In April 1951, Eduardo, at 42, and Nena, 25, exchanged vows in Besao, marking a new chapter in their lives. Nena, who had been offered a scholarship to the US at the time, made the heartfelt choice to stay.

Despite the age gap, their love and shared experiences became the foundation of a beautiful family. Eduardo, continued to run his studio, where his passion for photography thrived.

In 1952, their firstborn son, Roland, arrived, bringing immense joy to the couple. Eduardo's dedication to both his family and his art was evident as he balanced the demands of fatherhood with his photography.

In 1954, life took a new turn as Eduardo ventured into farming to provide for his growing family. His love for nature and the Cordillera region extended to his family life. In the heart of the Mountain Province, he established an orchard in Batalao, near the town proper of Sagada, a testament to his unwavering dedication to both his family and the land.

Over the years, Eduardo and Nena were blessed with six children: Roland, Jaime, Nena, Francisco, Elvira, and Leonor, enriching their lives with cherished memories.

In the next installment of our series, we will delve deeper into Eduardo Masferré's life, focusing on his experiences as a dedicated farmer and the inspiring journey of establishing the orchard in Batalao, Sagada.
